Crime is a mechanic in Stronghold 2 that contributes to negative popularity.

Description[]

Some people among the townsfolk may not be satisfied with their jobs and they could try to earn they living through crime. In Stronghold 2, peasants in some occupations may abandon their jobs to begin stealing. The workplace they are assigned to will be temporarily halted (and halt beer consumption/popularity should the inn owner turn to crime) until the criminal is dealt with accordingly. Criminals will head to a hovel or inn before attempting to steal; placing a building on them will cancel this and prompt them to immediately head straight for the granary. When rations are stolen from the granary, the advisor will inform the player of the theft. The criminal will take several rations before returning to a hovel to drop the stolen goods off before returning for the granary again. Even if the guards intercept the criminal, they will be unable to recover stolen rations.

Criminals are generated from most services, including:

The remaining services will never produce any criminals.

In order to apprehend criminals, a guard post must be made with the guard on active duty. The guard must have a courthouse to drop the criminal off in, as he will not go after criminals otherwise. Once inside the courthouse, criminals remain there indefinitely until a trial commences, which requires the player to have available punishment. The judge can lead criminals to the stocks, Humiliation Mask or gibbet, but anything else will require a Torturer's Guild. The torturer's guild will also handle non-lethal punishments, allowing the judge to focus on the trials.

Punishing criminals nets 1 honor every month. However, this is not worth on higher ranks due to obtaining honor from better sources as the workplace the criminal came from will not return to normal operation until they have been rehabilitated or killed.
