Lancelot du Lac is a character and a campaign opponent appearing in Stronghold Legends.

Overview[]

"Noble, chivalrious and without equal in Camelot, 'Lancelot du Lac' fights honestly and fairly. His refusal to use magic or 'unnatural beasts' is his weak spot however."

Information[]

Lancelot du Lac is an infamous character in King Arthur's legends. Being one of the most faithful knights of Arthur, Lancelot aided and fought alongside the king. He won many battles and helped to recover the Holy Grail. Lancelot was also in a secret love with Arthur's wife, Guinevere. He was in charge of Camelot, the famous castle and royal estate, where the Knights of the Round Table also assembled.

Lancelot is the symbol of chivalry, being a loyal knight and a true lover.

Defense[]

Lancelot has a compact rectangular castle, which has numerous lookout towers and an engine tower with a dragon harpoon on the corners. He stations archers in every corner and on the keep's roof, while a few men-at-arms guard the barracks and the gatehouse. He covers lots of his open walls with rolling logs, which tend to destroy his own buildings when used.

Economy[]

Lancelot's production is quick to set up for a war industry, utilizing an abundant number of weapons workshops. He builds quarries and iron mines to build his castle and supply his workshops, as well as he makes a lot of candles for the church, giving him a reliable source of income. Lancelot also builds chicken farms and apple farms to provide a small variety of food.

Offense[]

The troops Lancelot uses are somewhat limited in type, as he does not favour using the knights of the Round Table at all. Instead, he tosses what seems like a massive number of barracks units at his enemy: archers, men-at-arms and swordsmen. These units appear virtually everywhere, and due to their cheapness and a steady weapon production, Lancelot sends them with high frequency to take estates and lay sieges at the enemy.

When setting up a siege camp, Lancelot sends swarms of laddermen, as well as a number of catapults and mantlets to pummel walls and provide some protection against projectiles. Oftentimes, Lancelot also sends lone catapults from his home estate to harass.

Defense[]

Lancelot's archers and men-at-arms are cheap and abundant, posing a threat in the earlier stages of the game, when a proper defense is not yet established. Even though his swordsmen tend to lag behind, getting up a horde of light units of your own is not likely to stop the first few attempts from Lancelot.

Walling off your territory and getting up crossbowmen on high ground, along with a few infantry on ground level, is key to picking off Lancelot's infantry. Even though his units can throw arrows and javelins at you, your units will take reduced damage from them and using range advantage, they also get off a few more shots before the enemy has a chance to attack you. Building a chokepoint by leaving a gap in the wall will also cause Lancelot to charge in, which can blunted by durable troops, such as werewolves, a frost giant or two and pikemen. Siege engines are also stoppable by this combination.

Offense[]

In order to mount a siege on Lancelot, an overwhelming force is recommended. Since he does not use mangonels, displacement of your troops is not an issue here. The concentrated defenses also makes Lancelot somewhat annoying to deal with, as all of your troops will become under the concentrated fire of the whole castle. The answer is to bring armor of your own.

Either bring crossbowmen on top of siege towers, or use artillery to methodically whittle down one side of the castle, then to move in with a sweeping formation. Lancelot is helpless against durable units, even with the enormous range advantage from his lookout towers, so you can walk in relative safety. The only thing to watch out for is the wall-mounted rolling logs, which can wreak havoc on your units marching in. Lancelot will be busy sending reinforcements from his barracks, so try to demolish it if you can. The use of Sir Bedivere, Sir Percival, frost giants and Saxon warriors can deal with any troop Lancelot can throw against you. Vampiric creepers can trivialize sieges, as archers and men-at-arms en masse are ripe for conversion.

Don't forget to bait out Lancelot's lord ability before moving in to finish him off!
