Kublai Khan is a character and AI opponent in Stronghold Warlords.

Overview[]

Kublai Khan carries the traits of an ultimate emperor. Building his work for a lifetime, Kublai has been eager to develop and extend his cultural and militaristic Yuan empire. While enjoying his pleasantries, the Khan also ventures on campaigns to conquer landlords from a position of power.

Information[]

Strategies[]

The castle of Kublai is among the largest ones, featuring an enormous square interior with towers protruding from the main line in a comb pattern, three on each side. Multiple gatehouses are present on either side of the castle, while assorted artillery platforms riddle the fortifications.

Kublai produces both tea and clothes extensively for his populace. While he only takes care of rice, he builds a few positive Fear Factor buildings.

Like any Mongol khan, Kublai prefers to employ horse archers to raid early on in the game and to keep as a mobile response force. However, the core of his attack forces are made up by heavy Imperial crossbowmen and warriors, which are slow to recruit, but always provide a reliable strike force. As added troops, Kublai deploys fire lancers for close-range defense, and even imperial cavalry makes an appearance to crush frontlines. In sieges, mainly mortars and mantlets are constructed, backed with a few ballistae, trebuchets and rocket launchers.

Counters[]

Kublai Khan uses mostly slow, expensive troops and he is most vulnerable in the early stages of the game, when he has not managed to establish his weapons industry yet. Still, his troops need considerable firepower to deal with. Fire lancers with their flame attack can quickly ignite his swordsmen, while horse archers or auxiliary archers provide covering fire to soften them up and take out crossbowmen from longer range. If cavalry is used by Kublai, using hardy troops of your own (particularly samurai with their ability) can prove useful to blunt their charge.

Kublai's castle is rather large, which interestingly provides ample opportunities to siege him. As Kublai does not generally keep a lot of ranged units at his castle, a multi-pronged attack is advised, as his forces will be spread thin and thus quick to overwhelm. Deploy siege equipment to pick off key towers and engine platforms, while keeping them safe from any potential counterattacks. Removing the barracks and the military academy early can also stop Kublai from reinforcing his defenses.
