The ladderman is a very fast non-combat unit who carries a ladder with him at all times. The ladderman can set up his ladder against an open wall section or a gatehouse by issuing an attack command. He lacks the ability to engage enemy troops or structures.
The ladderman is recruited at the Engineer's Guild.
Ladders are a cheap but limited way to provide access to the enemy walls. They can support an unlimited number of troops. Once a unit finished climbing, it will end on the opposite end of the ladder (i.e. the next tile) and they will be able to move normally. It is prone to bug out unit pathfinding however.
Moreover, deploying laddermen comes with additional, significant drawbacks:
- Firstly, ladders can only be climbed on by archers, macemen and spearmen. Other units may not use them.
- Secondly, scaling the ladder takes some time to complete and units on top of it may risk falling to death, in case the ladderman underneath cannot support them. This can occur by moving or killing the ladderman, or by pushing away the ladder by a spearman (resulting in the ladder breaking and the ladderman disbanding).
Due to its limitations, the ladderman is rendered obsolete by the more expensive, but robust siege tower, which allows the traversal over walls for all unit types, as wall as it can withstand a lot more punishment from attackers.
