The Mangonel is a defense device.

Description[]

The mangonel is a defense engine that is mounted in a tower with a stable foundation. Similar to the catapult, it hurls a handful of rocks with great inaccuracy which are capable of dealing fatal damage to friend and foe alike. Mangonels are operated by engineers and are destroyed when their host tower crumbles.

Mangonels are mechanic engines that operate the same way as catapults. They were capable of catapulting smaller-sized ammunition, mostly smaller rocks, pots and optionally carcasses from their pots (instead of a sling that catapults did use). It is also easier to reload and fire this way. Due to this setup, the mangonel is more of an anti-personnel weapon than an actual demolisher engine and actually found utility in defenses' big towers. Tower mangonels were effective at inflicting unwanted casualties when a charge was led against the castle walls.

The mangonel is a defense engine that catapults concussive rocks with high fire rate, from long range. It must be placed atop a square tower or a round tower and two engineers must be assigned to it in order to operate, upon which the mangonel will be ready to fire. The mangonel sometimes automatically attacks groups of units, but it can be instructed to attack an area within range.

Rocks hurled from a mangonel are very dangerous to friend and foe alike, as they can bludgeon any foot unit in one hit and cause high damage in most siege engines (except portable shields). Moreover, their range is largely affected by a random spread, capable of being much larger or smaller than their intended area. This erratic behaviour makes the mangonel a very effective crowd control weapon, and an even more potent harassment device, creating death zones for the enemy in very unwanted places.

Strategies[]

  • Mangonels can be used to endlessly terrorize enemies in a close-spawn position. An outpost of a few large towers with mangonels atop - which is constantly reinforced by infantry - can prove very useful in wearing the enemy down by taking out their workers and scattered infantry over time, while the formation itself is almost impervious to attacks, requiring ranged siege engines to dismantle.

The mangonel catapults a bunch of rocks that deal damage in an area and knocks back units. It must be placed in a large enough tower without a hoarding (a bastion or larger) and requires two engineers to operate, who are immediately assigned upon placement. Catapulted rocks can incapacitate and knock back units, who die instantly if ending up in impassable terrain.

Mangonels can be ordered to attack a specific target or circular area within range. Despite their destructive potency, rocks are fired with great inaccuracy, making the mangonel able to hit targets outside range. Multiple mangonels can be instructed to 'carpet bomb' an area, creating a killing zone.

The mangonel is an expensive defense turret that can be built over walls and gates. It automatically acquires targets and does not need crew to operate. It catapults rocks into an area from medium range, which can cause great collateral damage to anything they hit. Rocks can hit buildings close-by, most of which can crumble from one hit. Mangonels can be ordered to attack a specific target or circular area within range, but they fire with great inaccuracy.

Up to five mangonel turrets can be installed at any time. It can also be repaired with the repair tool.
