The oil smelter is a defensive structure where oil is boiled.

Description

Hot oil is a devastating means of defense - this is what the smelter is for. It stores oil for engineers, who can pour them on enemies. Engineers can resupply and take another pot of oil away, as long as there is oil in the pot. An engineer must be on duty to give other engineers their portion of oil and to resupply the smelter, by taking pitch from the stockpile. Defenders who depleted their supplies are stupid and instantly run to the smelter to take another pot of oil. The smelter can store 10 units of oil.

Although the smelter is a fairly durable building, it spreads fire when destroyed, even if there is no oil being boiled in the pot. The small rally area where engineers assemble can immediately catch fire, severely damaging and roasting any unit around the perimeter.

Stronghold 2

In Stronghold 2, engineers are automatically assigned to the smelter if the player has money. The smelter supplies only 3 engineers and more must be built to hire more oil engineers.

Trivia

  • The smelter is the only building that requires iron to place in the Stronghold games.
