Saladin is one of AI opponent that appears in Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold Crusader Extreme.

Background

Saladin was the Sultan of Egypt & Syria who led the Muslims against the Crusaders. He eventually recaptured Palestine from the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem after his victory in the Battle of Hattin. In the third crusade, he fought against the forces of Christian opposition lead by Richard The Lionheart. The battle ended with a treaty that allowed for entrance of Christianity into Jerusalem, and called for a three year truce.

Appearance

As an Arabian lord, he wears a white turban with a golden crescent symbol at the front. His calm face is adorned by a thick facial hair around his mouth, and surrounded by red scarf with yelow color on the edge that is connected  at the front of his chest by a sunflower-like emblem. Like most other lords, he wears a metal chain armor. He wields a sword.

Personality

He is a calm, kind-hearted person that always cares for his people. He tends to refer the player as "my friend", indicating that he is an easy-going person. In battle, he never underestimate his enemies, nor overestimate them.

Strategies and Castles

Saladin is one of the hardest AIs in Stronghold Crusader. He is an Arabic lord, and is very good at getting very rich very quickly. One of his weaknesses is that he takes a medium amount of time to set up his keep and defenses.

He builds round towers, upon which he mounts ballistae and mangonels. His keep itself is a square, with most of the key buildings located inside. Occasionally, narrow moats will be around certain parts of the wall.

After his defenses are set up, he recruits Arabian units via the mercenary post. He does, however, use engineers to man siege equipment.

The best way to describe one of the Saladin's castle in its advanced stages would be "oozing". Over 200 soldiers are located in and around the walls, giving the keep the appearance (on the minimap) of overfilling with colored dots.

When attacking, he uses hordes of Arabian units of all types, including slaves and assassins. Siege equipment is also used in abundance, so defenses against a full-scale attack are a must when facing him. Recommended are square or round towers with ballistae or manogels, along with hordes of archers and crossbowmen. He is a formidable enemy and one that is not to be underistimated. For some reason he creates crusader weapons but never uses them unless he sells them. if he is left alone for to long he will create an army about 200-400 arabian swordsmen.
