Swordsmen are the one of the strongest combat units in the game. Their tempered steel can cut through even the mightiest armour and given time, it can inflict fairly high damage. While very slow moving, the swordsman's armour can absorb lots of projectiles, limiting the effectiveness of small squads of missile units.

Tactics
The best use of swordsmen is to protect the keep, especially when you leave your castle with your Lord or to protect the area around your keep, due to their slow movement. Estates can also be defended by them, however it takes some time to get there.

Swordsmen require a free peasant from the campfire, 1 sword, and 1 metal armour from the armoury with a sum of 40 gold to recruit.
Swordsmen can also make up the bulk of an army, if used in a group. Their high defense allows them to soak up a lot of damage before succumbing and repel enemies from the walls, and their high attack allows them to easily punch through enemy units and fortifications. They can also destroy most buildings and siege equipment with a few swings.

Swordsmen greatly benefit from other units' support during a siege. Overpowering the enemy's ranged capabilities and artillery bombardment from catapults can ensure that the swordsmen get close to their objective.

Weaknesses
Swordsmen are the slowest unit in the game. Most units can easily outmaneuver and/or distract them, as well as ranged units can simply move backwards to gain enough range and fire again. Evasive maneuvers can simply limit swordsmen's combat effectiveness by not fighting them.

Despite his durability, the swordsman is still vulnerable to concentrated fire and suffer heavy damage from siege equipments' projectiles. The penetrating bolts from crossbowmen take them out fairly easy from atop of a wall.

Swordsmen can also be evenly matched by outnumbering enemy forces. They fall short to knights however, due to their inferior statistics and combat power. Siege equipment can also send them fly, knocking them back and inflicting considerable damage.

The swordsman is the second strongest expensive unit from the barracks. Although he wears the same outfit as a knight, the latter has much thicker armour and easily bests him in a one-on-one fight. Consequently, the swordsman can move much faster.

The swordsman can fill in enemy moat and scale ladders.

Swordsmen require a free peasant from the campfire, 1 sword, and 1 metal armour from the armoury with a sum of 40 gold to recruit.
